I was 10 years old in 1947 (July) my dad had only been home from the war for about a year, so my brother and I were just getting to know him again. Apart from that, the one thing that does stick in my mind, was the winter we had, I have never known one like it in my life, the snow was unbelievable, it was up to my waist, they even had to close the school for a while. Talk about 'a big freeze', I've never seen anything like it since. !!

Here's a huge one, far larger and of far more importance than the single fact seems to say.
On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson made his major league (baseball) debut, thanks to Branch Rickey. Other teams followed, although it took the Red Sox 12 YEARS to get around to it.
Not only did Rickey and Robinson combine to desegregate MLB, but that was the real beginning of the modern civil rights movement in the US. Talk about a cultural revolution!

You can purchase DVDs and even Videos in most branches of WH Smith to cover every year from the 20s to the 60s. They are remastered copies of old Pathe newsreels. This will not only tell you what you wish to know but will probably be fun to watch too.
