If it is painted white, then that is easy. There are several options I've used on my rentals.

Depending on the hole, you can use plain old wood putty. You can use outside wood putty for a stronger bond.

You can also use car body putty. Yes, Bondex. It is durable, sandable, waterproof and paintable.

After you fill the hole sand with decreasing grit paper till it is smooth, then paint it white. Trust me, the landlord won't notice if the "white" paint is even close to the original color.

Good Luck

I have just finished painting my new house and have had to repair a couple of doors myself. And like the guys have said wood putty is your best bet. The secret is to put some on there and let it dry completely and sand it a little then keep repeating until the hole is filled and no longer noticeable. If you do too much at one time the wood putty will crack and then it wont help. After you think it is looking good just paint over it and all is well. Good luck!

It would be best to replace the door with a solid core door. The time and money spent on repairing a hollow core door is a waste. You will want to invest in a deadbolt lock as well as a spare key, to place in a very secret spot. Check with your homeowners insurance, maybe you could get them to pay for replacement, get some estimates and then collect the money and do the replacement yourself.

It depends on the size of the hole/crack. If it is small, get yourself some wood putty to fill it in. Let it dry, sand it and then paint it. If the hole is to big to fill with putty you may have to get a new door. A hollow interior door will run you anywhere from $25 up.

If it`s a smooth finished door, Bondo and sanding will probably work. If it has a textured finish, you may have to bite the bullet and buy a new door. Unless you`re artistically inclined and can imitate the texture, which would be very tedious and time consuming.

buy a can of wood filler and a putty knife, and a small hook with a handle (tool). Push the filler into the smashed and cracked area, use the hook to pull the pieces back in place. Let it set up sand and paint.
