I would follow the advice on checking to see who would benefit from it more (get the largest return). I assume you share income since she is not working, so it would be just a matter of who would get the larger return. However, if you do claim the baby, make sure you have your girlfriend's permission. In my state, if a women is not married when she gives birth to her child then she automatically has full custody no matter who is on the birth certificate listed as the father. To cover your basis, make sure you fill out the form and have your girlfriend sign it that gives you permission to claim your child as a dependent. This way, if anything ever happened to your relationship there is a clear understanding on the mutual agreement in writing on this issue. I believe you will need to do this for any and every year you have the child as your dependent on taxes, until you are both married or you become the full custodial parent in a court of law.

Either person really. Both your wages are taxed at the same rate unless one person makes a whole lot more than the other, then I would say whoever made less. If you make over a certain amount, your wages are taxed at a higher rate, which would give you a smaller refund in the end. You can check rates on the IRS website. I've known people who take turns claiming their child, or some split the extra refund amount.

It depends. If you live together and are not married, then whoever made more money should claim the baby and file head of household. That way you will get more money back. If you do not live together, then whoever made more money should claim the baby. I would still check with someone. You can log onto www.turbotax.com and go through the motions of both ways to see which way will get you the highest return. You don't have to file it from there and it is free until you put in your credit card info.
Good luck!

I stay in Illinois so i'm hoping i will help. The regulation is written that if 2 or greater every person is eligible to declare a new child as a based (that's your case) if it can not be agreed upon who will declare then the guy who has the utmost earnings is the guy who does it. So legally, the two of you may declare him/her. i comprehend a single couple that has 4 toddlers and each of them declare 2 so as that they get greater a reimbursement. And H&R block is the guy who advised them to do it that way. additionally, confident the toddler might properly be claimed this 365 days. as long because it is born on or formerly Dec.31,

For the earned income credit, to get the most money back for the child, the person who made the least amount of money for the year should claim the baby. You get more earned income credit the less you make. Good luck.

You should, also make sure to claim head of house hold. And depending on how much she made in the year you may also claim her. It really whoever mad ethe most money. Thats how you will get the most back. But if she intends to be out of work for awhile make sure you look into claiming her. My hubby does it every year.

YOu really need to ask a tax professional, but I'm pretty sure in order to claim a dependant (child) they have to live with you for over 6 months out of the year. Being born in November would kind mean that they didn't.

Since your girlfriend is no longer working, than you should claim the baby. You have worked longer and that would be the better benefit on your taxes.
