I know that with DVR you can pause/record/etc live tv, but are the channels or anything different? Thanks!

No...the channels are the same. The DVR stands for: Digital Video Recorder. It simply records what is available.

Basic cable is what most cable companies refer to for the minimum number of channels available within their cable system. In other words the least expensive option for total channels that you will receive.

DVR is short for Digital Video Recorder which is a box similar to a video cassette recorder (VCR) that will record programs with.

Some cable companies now offer a DVR box as an added option (added cost) for use to record their programs.

It does not matter whether it is basic cable or extended cable (more channels than basic).

They are two different options.
