I am not sure, I once had a copy of an old book about her life and her teacher would have went to jail if they were living in todays society for child abuse, that is a fact, then there never would have been a Helen Keller. Actually Helen's break through was when she was first new with her teacher and they were sitting at that table and her teacher smacked her in her face once, it settled Helen down and jarred her into reality. I would say she probably didn't do it very hard, but if you find old books you might find where it talks about it. That is how I found it. That was when her teacher was able to start working with her and she stopped being rude and unruly with her.

There is a play called "The Miracle Worker" which deals with helen's early life at home and the arrival of Annie Sullivan who is the miracle worker!
If I remember rightly, it was when Annie put Helen's hand under running water and spelled "water" into her hand that Helen made the breakthrough and realised that evrything is "named"
It is a very moving story.
hope you find what you need.
