e. the Depression of 1893 was the big cause here because it spurred on the anti-immigrant policies due to infllux of cheap labor; a protective tariff was proposed by Cleveland to offset cheap foreign exports thus diminishing domestic trade; Populist was heightened in midterm 1894 elections as would be evidenced when the Democrats nominated Bryan for President as a Democrat and Populist; the Republicans began their long standing tradition as appearing to aid the farmer and granges.
