What is the difference between them as far as data transfer rate? Would it be difficult to switch out a regular usb port with a high speed one on a notebook?

Your 'regular' USB port is one that only handles USB 1.1, and your high speed port means that it does USB 2.0, the difference between the two is just speed of data transmission. The theoretical max speed of transfer for USB 1.1 is 12 Megabits per second, while USB 2.0 is rated at 480Mbps. Though in practise they generally don't move data around at quite that speed.

The regular USB port was the first version, often referred to as USB 1.1. The high speed USB port is the second version, often referred to as USB 2.0. The main difference is the speed. USB2.0 is about 40 times faster than USB 1.1. USB 2.0 has a speed of about 480 mega bits per second, and USB 1.1 is 12 Mbps. Don't know if you can change a notebook's built-in USB port.

I don't know the full speed offhand, but a USB 2 port will allow a Flash drive to Switch about 150 Megs in 50 to 90 Seconds, whereas a USB 1 will take Hours

I'm guessing you mean USB 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0. Yes, 2.0 is way faster and a lot of the time you can just download drivers to upgrade your older ports. If not, there are PCI expansion cards available to plug in (with a desktop) or PC cards to plug in to a notebook. It would be worth it if you use USB things frequently, especially iPods.

USB 2(high speed) is up to 40 times faster than USB 1.

USB 2(high speed) supports three speed modes (1.5, 12 and 480 megabits per second).

This is self-explaniatory...

A high speed port transfers information at a high speed....

the regular doesn't.
