There are two general types: FGM and female circumcision. The latter is named because it's very similar to what we consider acceptable to males in most of the western world. Generally the clitoral hood is removed (not the clitoris itself), so a woman is still sexually functional. It's an unnecessary procedure, but it's a part of their culture, just like the same stupid procedure we accept for men in this one.
Also, to the poster above me who railed about how this is indicative of women being made to serve men and all that idiotic garbage, it's primarily the WOMEN who force other women to have this (AND PERFORM IT), not the men. Please get your facts straight.

It's a mutilation ritual performed by women on their daughters. It is thought that a man will not marry a woman who has not had this done because she copuldn't be considered a virgin. The removal of the clitoris and sewing shut of the vagina is to keep a girl a virgin and to make it so that if she does have intercourse, it will be painful and keep her from wanting to do it again. It's a control thing to control a woman's sexuality that often leads to constant pain, disfiguration, infection, difficult urination and menstruation, nearly impossible birth and sometimes death or suicide. It's absolutely barbaric and it's supposed to be illegal, but it still happens frequently in African countries and elsewhere in the third world. It came to the attention of the rest of the world several years ago and since then many women who had this done to them as girls have come forward to speak out against it and to get the rest of the world to put pressure on Africa to stop it.
I'm sorry, removal of part of the clitoris is not akin to male circumcision. The clitoris is the most sensitive of the female sex organs and removal of the clitoris, while it doesn't preclude intercourse, it means no orgasm and removes the primary source of sexual stimulation and satisfaction, thereby rendering the woman incapable of enjoying sex the way she should.

I like the answer above me. There is a difference between Mutilation and Circumcision. One I would call torture and the other is an elected cosmetic surgery. I think it matters what age it is done, how it is done (sterile, clean, with pain killers), and if it is voluntary.
I don't have any kids but if I ever have a boy it will be really hard to decide weather or not to circumcise. I think it is a dumb thing to mutilate your baby but I don't want him to not be able to get a date because of a decision I made for him as an infant. So I will decide when the time comes.
We can't complain about female circumcision if we still regularly perform it on males. But we can complain about mutilation that is overboard.

Man here.
I did see that and also it is on the Internet.
It is equivalent to and not like circumcision, for the female. Not only is it performed by cutting off the clitoris & part of the labia with primitive tools, there is no anitheisia administered.
This is a very barbaric procedure and practice.
But, how to you change peoples ways that are tied to traditions and religions that have been driven into them over hundreds & hundreds of years.
It's like the Muslim sects who refer to us infidels and want to kill every last one of us because one is Christian or one does not believe as they do.
It is graphic and inhuman as you say. And until some one changes their minds it will continue.
People can say what they want and try to cast down America.
But as for me, I am so glad I was born and raised and live in the freedom of the United States of America.
America is the best country by far to be born, raised and live in.
Thank God for America.

The words you're searching for are 'squeamish' and 'performed'.
As for the practice of FGM, it is limited to one small cultural group and most of the civilized world is well aware of this horrible practice.

Yes, this is a very common yet rarely discussed ritual which is perfomed on girls. To say it's disfiguring and horrific is putting it mildly. Let's remember too, that these "procedures" are performed without anaesthetic, sterilization and even common hygeine. Girls are left to die - as though they weren't strong enough to endure this procedure and so were weak to begin with.
When men are circumcised it's usually in a hospital.
When will people become outraged enough to stop mutilating girls?

Serin is right, expecially about getting one's facts straight.
It is simply amazing, but quite telling, that in the US, circumcision is routinely practiced on baby boys. In many cultures, boys and girls are circumcised. Odd that it only becomes a problem when it involves girls.
Routine or even religious circumcision is wrong when performed on children, period.

I think that this ritual is an attempt to control a womans lust. It may be hard to accept the idea but I think this is their belief. The idea is something like what is written in Matthew. This seems to the be the best example to express the savage idea.
"You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY';
but I (Jesus) say to you that everyone who looks at a woman (or man) with lust for her (him) has already committed adultery with her (him) in his heart.
"If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
"If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.

Yes this really does happen. There was a well-known model that spoke about her experience with this horrible tradition. It just shows you that in other parts of the world that it is still a man's world, and that women are put on this earth to serve men.
