Ok here goes:
1)divide each side of equation by 2
3m+1=2m-5
2)subtract 1 from each side
3m=2m-6
3)subtract 2m from each side
m=-6

that's the answer!

Since you're trying to solve for m, you want to get all the m terms on one side of the equation and all the whole numbers on the other side. So first, I'd subtract 4m from the right side so that the m term on that side canceled out. And whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other, so subtract 4m from 4m on the right, and subtract 4m from 6m on the left. You'll be left with:

2m + 2 = -10

Now do the same with the whole numbers. Subtract 2 from the left and subtract 2 from the right. And you'll get:

2m = -12

Now to get that m by itself, divide it by 2 to get rid of the number. And remember what you do to one side, you must do to the other, so divide each side by 2 and you'll get:

m = -6 Understand?
