Huge amounts of the UK are empty. Housing is very expensive because of the small suply and the huge demands. It would make sense to open up more land for building, there is one small problem. The rich people that own the current building land do not want other sites developed as this would reduce the amount their land is worth. As these are the people that fund the political parties, they will make sure their interests are maintained by not having more land put aside for development. If you insisted that any new devolopment be carbon neutral then this would not harm the enviromrnt. It would just make some rich people less wealthy and they will not let this happen.

Of course there a housing shortage, and there will always be until we stop every Asylum seeker coming here. The Government are looking at releasing green belt land for housing to fill the need for more homes, what i find strange is all of that land that is being used for the 2012 games, all brown field land, now instead of using it for the games, why don't they build thousands of homes there ? Its close to London and has a good motorway links, I'd say that was perfect for homes, instead of the games and the rate payer's,tax payers and National lottery funds being used for something that going to be a 5 min wonder.

Whoever thinks we should build on Green Belt land needs to be removed from the government for his suggestions. The UK does not need to lose the countryside and if we did not allow so many immigrants into this country we would not be in need of more houses. In my town it is a vicious circle, they build more houses and then there are insufficient supermarkets and the schools and hospitals are overstretched. Leave the countryside alone!

The reason house prices and the number of homeless people are both shooting up is because we don't have enough houses. I think the environment it worth protecting, but it comes down to the simple choice... it's them or us.
We can either destroy some of nature's habitat in order to save hundreds of peoples' lives in the long run, or leave it and let nature live on whilst more people die on the streets.
Personally I end up on the construction side of things, it doesn't mean that there isn't a good argument for the other side. The environment does need our protection, it's just about priorities.

Well the Government is not interested in what is best for the country - they are only interested in making money!! I think we should start restricting people to the number of kids they can have - say 2!! And limit the number of people we allow into this country then we would not have this problem of housing shortages!! It s like the Thames Estuary gateway, they want to build houses there despite warnings of the area getting flooded if such a development were to go ahead!!

With all the environmental evidence of global warming and the effects of building increasing flooding, more houses burning more energy etc and less "green" meaning less co2 being processed by plants what are they thinking. I think we should make them all live in North Norfolk and watch them get washed out to sea when the water levels rise.......

Housing shortages are affecting a lot of countries today, yes, and even in the land of opportunity the US of A. It is a time of population booming, and there will be exceptions to accommodate this social crisis everywhere.

I've also heard of a plan where the government can compulsorily purchase your nice big garden and build cheap houses for immigrants and chavs.
