What is the difference between them as far as data transfer rate? Would it be difficult to switch out a regular usb port with a high speed one on a notebook?

It would be difficult to switch them out, but it would be easier to add a pcmi card with USB 2.0 capabilities to your computer.

USB 2.0 is backwards compatible and it has higher transfer rates and is used sometimes to charge devices. If a USB 2.0 were to connect to anything with a 1.x device it will revert to the slower speed. The theoretical speed for 2.0 devices is 480 Megabits per second.

note: Megabits per second, most people assume it is MegaBytes per second, when it is closer to 60 MB, but actual transfer speeds can be much slower depending on cpu usage and cable quality and the like.

USB 1.0 and 1.1 are older standards that are much much slower.

The regular USB port was the first version, often referred to as USB 1.1.

The high speed USB port is the second version, often referred to as USB 2.0.

The main difference is the speed. USB2.0 is about 40 times faster than USB 1.1. USB 2.0 has a speed of about 480 mega bits per second, and USB 1.1 is 12 Mbps. Don't know if you can change a notebook's built-in USB port.

You would need to buy a PC card, with USB 2.0 ports on it.
