Replacing a laptop hard drive is not all that hard as long as you have the install disks for your OS and other software plus backups for your data.

If you don't, you might try buying a new hard disk with a portable USB disk enclosure. You pull the old drive, mount the new drive in the PC, mount the old drive in the USB enclosure, reinstall your operating system and such on the new drive, and then see if the PC can recover any of your data on the old drive.

I'm not familiar with black screens that say "hit ctrl+alt+del". You're going to have to give us the exact message and when it happens. Is it a windows screen or is it something it displays immediately after it gives you the checking memory and hard drives screen? Is it on the top left of the screen or in the center?

Most likely your laptop is fine.

It sounds like a problem with the hard drive.
If it is old, chances are the hard drive is failing and needs to be replaced. It might be able to be repaired using some utility, but when it starts having problems, it is best to just replace the hard drive.
