I'm 21. The girl I really like won't talk to me anymore because of my drinking problem.
I got fired from the past 5 jobs. Just today I got fired from my bank. I don't know what to do. I feel shattered, alone, depressed...I can't cope with the pain. It's too much.
My parents expect me to be a big businessman. I don't think I can do that. I"m a loser. What are the chances of me being successful? Nil. I got fired 5 times! Call center, Best Buy, Home depot, rona, and now Td Canada Trust.
I don't know if I can be successful in life. My parents are going to be very depressed when I tell them I'm fired.

So cry, lay in bed, think about how your life sucks, and be depressed. When you have gotten that all out of your system, tell yourself that this is the first day of the rest of your life. Put your past behind you, and convince yourself your life is going to be drastically different from now on. Get a piece of paper and a pen. Sit down. Write out goals that will help you achieve this. What would make you not a loser? For example 1.) Stop drinking 2)Find a new job that I like 3) Resolve not to get fired 4) Talk to my parents 5) Apologize to girl 6) Get counseling etc etc. Once you have gone down the list and taken the first step for each item, you will truly feel better about yourself. For example....the first step on number 1 is to call AA, the first step on number 2 is to get the classifieds, number 5 is to pick up the phone...etc.

Good luck.

Please consider going to AA or preferably into counseling. You are only 21, and you do not want to live the rest of life feeling the way you do. I have a brother who is once again doing prison time for drinking related charges. He actually is Bi-Polar but was never diagnosed until he was already an alcoholic. Through the years he tried subconsciously to self medicate himself through alcohol. He has been in and out of jail or prison most of his life. The sad thing is, he is a wonderful guy and extremely talented. He's a great artist, plays guitar and sings, can work on computers and cars and he has the biggest heart of all. The problem though is he would get a million things going at once and then didn't finish them. He was unable to stay focused on his down side...and then resorted to drinking. He never felt worthy of love, although he is the most lovable person. I used to say to him.."I wish you could love yourself, as much as everyone else loves you." If things started going good for him, he always felt he didn't deserve it, and would ultimately and unknowingly sabotage it. I hope that you really do get the help you need now. Don't worry about what your parents think or anyone else thinks for that matter. Worrying about yourself and get the help you need. Things will look up when you can see clearly.

Try and find a professional listener in your community...

- at your church (you don't have to go regularly)
- at a community center
- at a community health center
- sometimes even a hospital or your doctor

Your problems are not always apparent to you. But it sounds like you have a handle on some of them. Start thinking much smaller, about how you will make it 1 hour without a drink.

What can you do during that hour to find a job? Or workout?

Keep it doable. Then repeat it for the next hour. Eventually you will be planning out your week. But it takes small steps.

Successful people don't have unsuccessful thoughts. Once you stop thinking like a loser, you will stop living like a loser.

The only barrier to your success is your point of view.
