1 mi = 1760 yd = 5280 ft
so 1/4 of a mile can be expressed several methods
1/4 mi = .25 m (in decimal)
1/4 mi = 1760 yd/4 = 440 yd
1/4 mi = 5280 ft/4 = 1320 ft
If you want a visual, think of the track at your school, 1/4 mi. is one lap around the track (your track maybe metric 400 m, but that is still very close to a 1/4 mi.)
If you were to jog a 12 minute per mile pace, it would take you 3 minutes to jog a 1/4 mile.

Our road system is still endowed with miles and I don't think there have been any moves to change things. I saw recently near Taunton in Somerset some sign posts which had eighths of a mile which would be 220 yards.

Walk until you see the quarter. Keep looking at the ground. :)
It should appear in five city blocks, lengthwise, because that is a quarter of a mile.
