Hollywood's portrayal is often positive as well (all the King Arthur legends for instance), so it's a mixed bag based on what story they need.

For some reason England has been a stereotype for movies set in the middle ages (likely because they speak english). But during the dark ages there really weren't many good kings, and many people were corrupt and cruel.

Oh yes it's terrible the way they malign jolly old England.
In the middle ages England was just a happy happy place, where everyone shared the wealth, & prosperity.
Everyone was kind to one another, & gave each other hugs, & kisses. No one was evil, or ruthless. The horses didn't take a dump in the streets, they waited until they were in the barn & did it in privacy.
No England wasn't anything like the way Hollywood portays it.
It's probably the influence of neighbouring communities like Los Angeles, where everyone is out for themselves, & shooting, stabbing, & beating each other that causes Hollywood to see the world as such a bloodthirsty place.

The British Empire at the time of those movies was actually quite the mean little bunch. Exaggerated yes but the point remains the same that allot of Blood was spilled in the name of the Queen. But in history, it's always the winners who tells the stories so we don't really know the full extent to which people like these two folks ran their campaigns.

They're all wankers. The lot of them. The directors and writers I mean. You Yankees can never grasp the full meaning of what it means to be a Brit and your movies reflect that. Long live Queen Mum.

I feel how most Americans feel about it... It's Hollywood. They're there precisely for the purpose of mass-marketing things and smoothing out all the wrinkles of history to make the story fit into a convenient 2-hour slot (while leaving plenty of room for sword-fighting and raunchy sex; and fire... they really seem to go for fire).

Hollywood's portrayal of anything is complete fairyland... and the correct way to address a 'Brit' is to use his post code.

I could care less. Even if it was for better or for worse every county is mocked about the present or their past. Just another day.
