Steptronic is just a fancy name for an automatic tranny. Put it in drive, press the gas pedal and go.
It just has an option to slide the lever over and move it up and down to change gears manually.

Okay. You've been given the layman's answers.
You drive a 2007 3-Series. That make it either a 328 or a 335. Not that that really matters. The important part is coming.
You have the basics. Moving to "D" means drive. Moving it to the left puts it into "SPORT" and then moving it forward downshifts and back, upshifts.
The overall goal is to manage the engine's power better than an automatic, which is told by a computer management system to shift at about 3000-3500 rpms. The Steptronic allows you to manage when the car shifts by doing it yourself. The optimal torque range for a 3-Seris is actually above 4000 rpms and below 5000rms. Shift somewhere in there (its different on each model, but usually very close) and you'll get maximum acceleration, almost as if you were driving a manual.
DO NOT shift at redline, the computer controlling the Steptronic doesn't like it and will shift for you automatically as not to blow yp your car. In order to use the Steptronic effectively, you must find the torque charts on the internet (very easy to find, just search BMW 3-Series Technical Specifications) or get your car dyno'ed ($50) which will tell you, customized, where peak performance on your car is.
The Steptronic is more fun, yet easier because there is no clutch. Its not quite as good as the SMG, but its sill fantastic. I hope you have fun driving it and good luck.

You can drive on automatic or shift the lever over. If you shift to + u shift up and - is down shift. I have VW with steptronic. Much more fun than auto.
