If the music is played away from the womb, as on a stereo system in a car or in a room, then no. It is muffled and shouldn't be a problem. Fetuses can begin to hear in their fifth month. The idea of putting headphones on the belly and playing music very loudly isn't a good one, however. Keep the volume down if you do this because the amniotic fluid can actually make the sound louder to the baby. An interesting article on music and fetuses can be found online at http://www.musica.uci.edu/mrn/V6I1W99.html#womb.

Any kind of loud sound transferred to the womb -- including those really stupid Beethoven headphones for pregnant tummies -- creates a response of extreme stress in babies.

Your baby can hear you talking, hear you singing, can hear music that you are listening to at a reasonable volume. Babies do respond well to music that is played at a reasonable volume (not piped in at a huge volume by headphones!). It won't hurt your child to be around really loud noise (it will be muffled for him), just stress him out.

But your baby gets the hormones you have created when you are happy, sad, mad, etc. Your baby gets stressed out any time you are upset. So I would be more worried about your OWN hearing!

No, it's not bad for them. I listen to everything from Metallica to Frank Sinatra to Mozart. And I sang my heart out all the time when I was pregnant too. My toddler LOVES music. He especially likes Green Day and the Rolling Stones and stops dead in his tracks when he hears Mozart, the baby Mozarts DVD did that to him.

Crank it up and sing girl. You're not hurting the baby.

I went out a lot while I was pregnant and my daughter came out fine. She kicked a lot when it was loud, but it should be ok. They can hardly hear anything inside anyway- most of the sound is muffled out and does not hurt their ears or anything.

Nope, it's very muffled. But you might want to turn it down after they're born. When I was pregnant, my fiance constantly blared the music in the car and my daughter is perfectly fine. Plus, they say music is good for babies.
