I know that this is an odd subject, but what about getting caught doing some thing wrong and the consequences, what you learned from it and how you would change it, knowing what you know now.

I had to write many of these, what helps a great essay is just think of all the good things you have been able to accomplish in your life. What do you enjoy to do the most, and how can that relate to your past bringing up ways, who was the most important person to be there for you and made you feel good inside just to know this person beleived in you or just put hope in your life to make you feel like the person you are. Make sure you dream about making this essay come to life when she reads it...

Your first idea and effort should not be so glibly dismissed you should talk to the vice principle or a student counselor to see why it was refused and if it can be accepted.

For an alternate suggestion choose a favorite book or TV show and read/watch it again looking at it as you remember and how it really is.

Good Luck!

"Coming out of the fog"? Is that some kind of euphamism for overcoming an obstacle, or seeing the light, or what? Well, here are my ideas, although I don't kow how helpful they will be...

Realizing there is no Santa...

Having and getting over your frist "crush"

Discovering something you had always trusted was not what it seemed (political leader, a parent, a friend)

GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL and experiencing growing up.

Good luck.

I like your first idea, and I would tell your government-propagandist teacher that you will not re-write it, and if the subject material makes her uncomfortable, she should cease assigning uncomfortable lessons.
