i have a '95 jeep cherokee. had the oil changed and was told this needed to be done. is it important? what is it really?

the gear oil is a long lasting oil, per-training to viscosity.

but, due to, the so low level of the differential has the tendency of contamination by dust and water of the rainy days.

If you have it in a shop and they want to do it let them. It is not vital but we are talking about a Jeep. This is a 12yo vehicle and this has probably never been done.
For what it costs it would be worth it. Figure the factory oil is 12 years old. New oil will last a long time.
I prefer synthetic for my Wrangler diffs. Lucas also makes a great additive. (see link)

It all depends on weather you've done some offroading through deep puddles and got water into it.

There is a fill plug on the housing that is easily removed to check the fliud level and condition.

If the oil has ANY water in it, it does need to be changed.

Oil is cheap. Differencials are not.

Check you owners manul, I think mine suggests every 50K miles.... most people never change theirs the whole life of their car.

If it is clean and no metal filings in it then I've been told its OK.
