right-click-and-deleting, delete button, nothing works. i can't open properties on it. scanning with norton anti-virus only returns a message saying the file is invalid. i have no idea how to remove this file without completely formatting my drive, which is just rediculous. any ideas?

Refresh or reboot and see if it is still there.

By all means make sure it is not a system file first......if you are using Windows XP you can run msconfig and remove it that way. Click on start click on run in the box that shows up type msconfig, then click ok In the box that comes up click on the boot tab, find the box for safe mode and put a check mark in the box, then click ok it will restart in safe mode. from there you should be able to go in and remove the file. when you are done make sure you go back to the run and msconfig and uncheck the safe mode and then restart your computer. Safe mode only loads what is nessary to run the computer. . Good luck....I had to remove a trojan horse this way a few weeks back.

Run a registry cleaner. I use RegScrubXP.

Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2048

Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk

What you can do is boot the PC into safe mode and try deleting the file again. That may well work. You can also try doing it by command line (Start, Run, type "cmd" without quotes) and using a delete command although I suggest against that until you try the safe mode option.

It might be a system file. Microsoft locks those off under normal circumstances to prevent people from tampering and destroying the computer's ability to function. What is the file name? if it is a 32 file, or a .dll file, you're wasting your time.

where is the file? Is it in the system directory or temp?
Can you rename it to something like xyz.jpg or something then remove it? This sometimes works.
Try DelinvFile.exe
http://www.purgeie.com/delinv/index.htm
It can remove invalid files.
you can also try spybot which has a secure shredder.

Why dont you get into DOS and get rid of it using a file manager. I suggest using Hirens Boot Cd which you can download from here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/9845095/softarchiveBootCD87.rar

This is a bootable disk and so you can get into dos and use file managers to get rid of it.

PS The password for that is
