For exactly the reason you might imagine. Marathon runners have to carry their bulk long distances. The less bulk they have, the easier it is to carry it farther. Short distance runners are about power. You'll notice at the end of 100m, world record holders are still out of breath.

You mean why are long distance runners slender while sprinters are not. Endurance takes one kind of muscle or body type. Speed takes another.

Because they're RUNNERS. Burns calories like crazy and keeps you fit.

I run marathons and I'm not short.
Yup I'm slim though.
Probably burns off all the fat.
Dunno really.

long fibered muscles are better for distance running which causes the slender look.
short fibered muscles are better for bursts of speed which causes a bulkier look
