I've worked for Asda as a checkout operator. You need to be a people person and have an outgoing personality. You will notice that customers will keep coming back to your checkout. I always say hello how are you, offer to help them pack thier shopping, smile with a genuine smile, and dont take your personal problems to work with you. When I started at Asda I used to struggle with giving change although the till tells what correct change to give. I've heard customers complain about checkout operators going to too fast. I will start to scan and help pack till they have caught up.

Besides being honest, good with numbers, knowledgeable about products, services and company policy, I'd say the number one skill necessary to work in retail or in any job with the public is the ability to not take things personally. To be able to brush off a negative interaction and move on to the next customers and not take out your frustrations on them, but to be able to smile and still be friendly, pleasant and helpful.

The only thing that matters to me at a checkout is a smile and a friendly hello. I reckon that must be the hardest part of a totally soul destroying job.

From experience at my local supermarket you need to be a miserable, sour faced, ignorant and half witted moron with the sense of humour of a Klingon on heat!
