when you put a cell in a salt concentration that is higher then his own the salt will go in the cell and water will follow (diffusion)
and so the cell gets full of water the osmotic pressure is rising till the cell membrane is broken. and the cell dies.

It's cells try to balance out the amount of molecules on the inside and out side of the body. So the fishes cells take in to much water and the fish will get bloated with water and die. The opposite will happen with a salt water fish if put in freshwater. It loses all of it's water and will shrivel up and die. Because of osmosis which is basiclly the movent of water from a high concetration to a low concetration. All animals do this. It allows for an equilibrium. Other wise know as homeostasis. It keeps an equal concentration all through out the body.

although osmosis is a case, salt water holds a different level of oxygen within the water.

most likely before salt issues, the fish will not be able to breathe due to dissolved oxygen issues.

the biggest exception being salmon
