People have bad days, it's part of your job not to take them personally.
Unless they touch you.
Then you have all of our permission to Kick the holy crap out of everybody.

It's brutal the way some people treat others when they think they can get away with it. Some people are just prix. But also, the retail assistant IS the store to them, and if they bought something and it didn't turn out right for whatever reason, or there is no one to wait on them, they address that to the first store person they see, be it the owner or the guy there to replace light bulbs. It's not fair, but they do. And, when we work for a company, part of what we are being paid for IS to be that company to our customers - but in a better world, people would only yell at us when we personally did something wrong, and then only when we did it deliberately and not by innocent error.

Because it's easier to do that than it is to face their own stresses. I think sometimes people are just looking for someone to take it out on. Perhaps they don't have someone at home to talk to or an outlet in which they can express their feelings. Or maybe they're just having a bad day. I think for the most part it's not something that those certain people think about, it just happens.
And then of course you run across the people who have a superiority complex and think that they are better than everyone else. That because you work a retail job you are automatically supposed to bow down and do everything they ask them.
Retail...it's not for everyone..and you'll likely run across people from every walk of life. It's just something you have to deal with. Unfortunately not everyone has manners, or good reasoning skills. (or a head that isn't shoved up their own butt)

It's due to the misnomer that "The Customer is always right". All that phrase has done is turn appreciative and considerate customers into braying buttholes who cry and whine about anything they think hasn't gone their way. And the retail employees are unfairly caught in the middle.
That's just my opinion.

My mom use to do that a lot, and she'd always cause a scene. It was always really embarrassing. Maybe those people just need to vent, and retail assistants are easy targets...

That's extremely unfair, but people take out their frustrations on the person who is present, even though they might not deserve it. It's kind of because you there in front of them and they can vent. You're an easy target and probably can't snap back because of your job.

Because they don't have the guts to stand up to the people that really pissed them off in the first place.
