I can't find this anywhere. I wrote the NBA but they didn't respond. Are women specifically prohibited from playing in the NBA, or is it within the rules for a woman to try out for/be drafted by/play for an NBA team?

I'm getting conflicting answers. If you know there is a rule prohibiting women in the NBA, tell me where I can verify it. If there is no rule, tell me of an reliable source which says so (newpaper article, something).

There is no rule prohibiting women from playing in the NBA... I believe the closest woman ever coming to playing in the NBA was Cheryl Miller who was drafted in 1986 in the United States Basketball League...(an all men's league sort of thought of as the NBA's minor leagues at the time) but her career was cut short due to knee injurys in the late 80's.

Hey Sam M., if you're gonna criticize the WNBA at least get your facts straight. The record for most points in a game is 57, which was just scored this past August. That happens maybe twice a month in the NBA. AND you have to consider that because of Title IX, women have only been playing college basketball for the past 15-20 years, and before the WNBA was formed 10 years ago all of this great talent wasn't being drafted. Now that there is a league in existed there are more female basketball players in college and on an international level. At least let it catch up a bit to the NBA.

It's kind of like the LPGA and the PGA. I don't think women are expressly prohibited from the NBA. It's kind of like an unspoken agreement. Yes the WNBA was created strictly for women, but if a woman could ever make an NBA team I would definitely say she should be able to play.

No there is no rule that syas women can't play in the NBA. Nor is there any rule that says woman can't play in MLB or the NHL. Matter a fact a couple years ago there was a female goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightening. Just to correct the gentle man above me it wasn't Cheryl Miller it was Nancy Leiberman back in the day. And she played for 3 years before the leauge folded.

there is not any NBA rule that announces women folk are excluded from playing, because there hasn't been a want for one. it is theoretically feasible that a very proficient woman athlete ought to win a niche on an NBA roster. although, adult adult males are a lot more suitable, better, and larger useful then women folk that even the perfect woman basketball participant couldn't make a good mens branch one college crew.

ASHELY "they are dumb to only let guys play i mean womean are better basketball players than guys."
is that why they have a smaller ball, a shorter 3 point line, a shorter season, shorter playoffs, and SOMEHOW the leading scorer gets 25 ppg. Their stats are nowhere near the guys. And no, passion doesnt make them better. If they are better than why dont the stats prove it? Wasnt the highest score by one person in the WNBA 42? Doesnt that happen 2-3 times a week in the NBA?

The better question is, are men allowed in the WNBA? Make fun of me all you want, but I would definetley go out there to make more money even if it was against women.
I would say women are allowed to play in the NBA but they are simply not good enough. I'm tired of women thinking they are equal to men when it comes to sports. They are not, men are more athletic and entertaining, unless its like maria sharapova but we dont watch her for her talent.

Isn't that what the WNBA for? I just don't understand why players would want to go into inter leagues. Michelle Wie tried it and that ended disastrously. There is no reason to switch because all is well in this system. Just be content that your in a professional league, don't get overgreedy.
