The battle between the sexes is most evident in the play in the relationship of Petruchio and Katarina. From the moment that they meet, these two characters begin a fiery relationship defined by witty, humorous dialogue exchanges. Petruchio can be looked at in one of two ways: as a “cruel, unfeeling bully” or a “man who tamed Kathrina”. From comparing to the 21st century, I think Petruchio was a “cruel, unfeeling bully”, because from the beginning he doesn’t see Kathrina as an opportunity to be happy married, but as a chance to get rich. Even before he met Kate he asked her father how much dowry he will get. When they first meet, instead of being friendly he was being annoying, and that proves the cruel personality of Petruchio.

Men were to make all the decisions in a woman’s life. Father made all the decisions of his daughter, including her marriage. After the marriage husband were to make all the decisions of his wife. The life of a woman was so difficult in the 16th century. In now a day’s woman takes the most important part of the society: in many countries woman happens to be the prime minister and make all decisions about the county, women get to vote for the elections and women get to teach men.

In the 16th century, every ones favour was for the quiet, fair and obedient women. As an example, Baptista appears to be an irresponsible father, by unfairly favouring Bianca in front of Kathrina. I believe that Kathrina became a shrew from seeing her father’s favours for Bianca, but not for her. In the 21st century, being obedient to the father is not the same as being obedient to the husband. Husband should be some one who a wife would share her thoughts and ideas with, not a person who commands her. The way in which Petruchio “tames” Kathrina gives her no choice but to obey or she will loose her clothing, food, shelter and being able to go to her father’s house. He gives her no chance to get to know him and makes no effort to get to know her, he just sees Kathrina as a challenge and a financial gain.

To sum up for the above reasons, I would say that Petruchio is a “cruel, unfeeling bully”. By crushing her spirit, Petruchio ruins the very thing that makes Kate unique. If a woman like Katarina happens to live in 21st century, then she happens to be a brave woman who stood up for her self. Women shouldn’t be spineless, and they should make their own decisions on terms of living a better life.

Hi I think your essay's alright - just made a few ammendments, hopefully this helps! -cheers!

The comedy “The Taming of the Shrew,” is about love and marriage. The play draws much of its humour from its focus on the battle of the sexes. This battle revolves around the perception of woman’s role and duty as a wife. The story is set between late 1580’s and early 1590’s. Society then was different from todays. In Shakespearean time, women appear spineless, under the constant control of men: her life prior to marriage was controlled by her father, and after marriage, the husband.

The battle of the sexes is most evident in the relationship of Petruchio and Kathrina. From the moment they meet, these two characters begin a fiery relationship defined by witty, humorous dialogue exchanges. Petruchio can be looked upon in one of two ways: as a “cruel, unfeeling bully” or a “man who tamed Kathrina”. Given if the play was set in the 21st century, I think Petruchio was a “cruel, unfeeling bully”, because right from the beginning he does not see Kathrina as someone he could be happily married to but as a chance to get rich. Even before he met Kathrina, he asked her father how much dowry he would be getting. When they first met, instead of being friendly, he chose to be annoying, and that proves the cruel, unfeeling personality of Petruchio.

Men were to make all the decisions in a woman’s life. Kathrina’s father made all the decisions for his daughter, including her marriage. After her marriage, her husband would be the one to make all the decisions for his wife. The life of a woman seems quite difficult in the 16th century. Today, women play many important roles in the society. Like men, women ger to vote for the elections and are the dominant gender in schools where they teach both sexes. In some countries, women have been elected as prime ministers and made important decisions affecting the county.

In the 16th century, everyone favours the quiet, fair and obedient women. For example, Baptista appears to be an irresponsible father, by unfairly favouring Bianca even in Kathrina’s presence. I believe that Kathrina became a shrew partly through her unpleasant experience of seeing her father favouring Bianca more.

[Maybe you want to elaborate a bit more like saying how by being unfair in his treatment it makes her think that because she’s not quiet and obedient therefore she does not deserve to be loved as much etc]

In the 21st century, obedience is perceived differently, so is marriage. Today, husbands are regarded as a partner, someone whom a wife would share her thoughts and ideas with, not a person who commands her about. The way in which Petruchio “tames” Kathrina gave her no choice but to obey or she would face losing her clothing, food, shelter and the right to visit her father in his home. He gave her no chance to be in touch with him and made no effort to get to know her better, he saw Kathrina merely as a challenge and a financial gain – almost like a game.

In conclusion, I would say that Petruchio is a “cruel, unfeeling bully” because he has crushed her spirit; ruinning the very essence that makes Kathrina unique. If a woman like Kathrina lived in the 21st century, then she would stand alongside with many other brave women today who can stand up for themselves - women who are not spineless and have the power to make their own decisions, living life on their own terms.

When they first meet, instead of being friendly, he was being annoying (GIVE SPECIFIC EXAMPLE) and that proves the cruel personality of Petruchio.

Men were to make all the decisions in a woman’s life. The Father made all the decisions for his daughter, including her marriage. After the marriage, the husbands were to make all the decisions for his wife. The life of a woman was so difficult in the 16th century. (WASNT QUITE SURE WHAT YOU WERE TRYING TO SAY HERE SO I CHANGED IT) Today women have a significant role in society. In many countries, women happen to be the prime minister and make all decisions about that country. Women get to vote for in elections and women get to teach men.

In the 16th century, society preferred the quiet, fair and obedient women. As an example, Baptista appears to be an irresponsible father, by unfairly favoring Bianca in front of Kathrina. I believe that Kathrina became a shrew from seeing the egregious difference of treatment. In the 21st century, being obedient to the father is not the same as being obedient to the husband. Husbands should be someone who a wife would share her thoughts and ideas with, not a person who commands her. The way in which Petruchio “tames” Kathrina gives her no choice but to obey or she will loose her clothing, food, shelter and being able to go to her father’s house. In summary, for the above reasons, I would say that Petruchio is a “cruel, unfeeling bully”. By crushing her spirit, Petruchio ruins the very thing that makes Kate unique. If a woman like Katarina would have happened to live in 21st century, then she would be considered a brave woman who stood up for her self. Women shouldn’t be spineless. In fact, they should make their own decisions in terms of living a better life.

just a few little errors

1) see Kathrina as an opportunity to be happy married

I think the right word in this should be "happily" no happy

2) In now a day’s woman takes the most

this should be "Nowadays woman takes the most"

3) in many countries woman happens to be the prime minister

say it this way "many countries have a woman as prime minister"

4) woman like Katarina happens to live in 21st century,

every where else in the story you have her name as kathrina but here you change it

5) decisions on terms of living a better life.

I think this should be "decisions in terms of living a better life."

but other than some very small errors I think you did a fine job I hope you get a good mark for this
