I think there are three types of questions on yahoo answers.
1). Idiot questions - these questions are asked by people who have no real interest in the answers. A lot of religions and political ranting goes in this category because these people don't really care about the answer, just the shock value of the question. I'll lump questions like "what is your favorite pudding flavor" in with these too.
2). Emotional questions - these are asked by people who really just want others to agree with them and "tell them what they want to hear". "Mark broke up with me, what do I do?" etc. They want an answer but they want the NICE answer. A lot of times these people actually need the opposite, but they wouldn't pick a "mean" answer or a logical one because they want their choice to be reinforced, not to get a real answer.
3). Curiosity questions - these are asked by people who really want a well thought out and logical answer. Too often these questions are just "Who was the king of france in 1208" and can easily be found through google or wikipedia. Alas most of these questions can't be answered by people like us and need professional help from lawyers, doctors, or other professionals.
In short, I think it is unusual for the true "best" answer to win, and yes the nicest answer will usually win a #2 question.

No it isn't. I think people who ask questions should understand that people of all ages and personalities are going to be answering them, and some answers will be nice, some willl not. It depends on how people take these answers.Sometimes the "nicest" answers aren't gonna cut it, and the person who is asking the question needs a nice dose of the truth. I know there will be alot of ignorant people who will spam your question page with useless garbage that has nothing to do with the question being asked. Some people need to lighten up.

Not always - in some cases the nicest answer can just cause problems. In other cases, however, the nicest answer is the best answer!

The "nicest" response to a question is often what the asker wants to hear. That may not be the right or most practical answer.

The best is choses on the subjective principle of the asker...
The nicest is chosen on the subjective principle of the reader...

I believe it is the most informative, thought-out answer that wins. Since the questioner is usually the one choosing the best answer, the answer he/she most agrees with could be the best answer, while not being the true BEST.
I also believe that grammar helps.

Great question, one I've been pondering myself as well. I do think people tend to at least pay attention to nicer answers. I mean honestly, do you want to pick an insulting question? No one does! Have a great day
