You first have to help yourself before you can help others. I would not like for someone to teach me about something they don't know much about. It doesn't make sense that if a person cannot swim for that person to attempt to save a person who is drowning. First you learn then you teach. It's the same concept. When you help someone make sure that the area you are helping them in is one you can achieve without you or the person in the short or long run greatly failing - whether the task is simple or complicated, unless it for the purpose of learning.
When you can finally help someone, make sure its something they can learn from. If not, they will always seek your help, by this point it is not help, but dependency for which you need to be compensated or don't provide the help.

Acts 20:35 brings out the answer to that question:
35 I have exhibited to YOU in all things that by thus laboring YOU must assist those who are weak, and must bear in mind the words of the Lord Jesus, when he himself said, ‘There is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving.’”
Here is an exerpt from an article that I am sending a link to:
Jesus knew that true happiness involves relationships with others. We humans are gregarious by nature, so we cannot be truly happy if we isolate ourselves or if we are constantly in conflict with those around us. We can be happy only if we feel loved and if we love others. Fundamental to such love, Jesus taught, is our relationship with God. Here especially, Jesus' teaching departs from that of the Dalai Lama, for Jesus taught that humans cannot be truly happy independent of God. Why is that so?—Matthew 4:4; 22:37-39.
1 Timothy 5:8 says:
8 Certainly if anyone does not provide for those who are his own, and especially for those who are members of his household, he has disowned the faith and is worse than a person without faith.
This shows that we have the direction and the need to do what is right in helping others.
Matthew 24:13 says:
13 But he that has endured to the end is the one that will be saved.
This scripture above indicates that it takes effort on our part to endure to the end and shows that we also need to help ourself. One way we can do that is by taking in accurate knowledge of Jehovah God and the one he sent forth Jesus Christ for as the bible states "this means everlasting life."

when helping others you are helping yourself by being a good person but be careful not to take on so much that it disrupts your life or takes away from the needs of your family
