In many ways....The main one is that you choose your friends...You can't usually choose your family members. A true friend encourages and is there for you when you need it most and puts up with your b.s. Not many family members do this..

Personally I cannot make that statement. You can have great friends and/or fine feathered friends and with each you can have a great time also. But there are things that you would certainly not share with friends that family are aware of. In addition family is there to give you unconditional love and some friends will take flight the moment that some trouble arises. The old adage is so true here "you can pick your friends but you can't pick your family".

you choose your friends for one thing, which is a blessing for those of us not blessed with a supportive family. i also think a friend is more objective than family. a friendship is also more of a two-way street because both people CHOOSE to participate in the relationship. family can just be mean sometimes i think because they're relatives and they know they can get away with it, if that makes any sense.

I can talk to friends about girl trouble much easier than I can with my parents. But that doesn't mean that they matter to me more. I suppose I cannot give you a good example of that.

They can understand, advise you and the have objective opinion on you! You can choose your friend while it is impossible to choose your family. Undoubtedly friends can prooved to be our only strength in difficult moments!
