slang definition of a "hairball"...
when something gets stuck in your windpipe, or you say "it went down the wrong hole" while eating and can't stop coughing... and gagging. Your eyes get watery and you look like an idiot because you're laughing at the same time. Every time you inhale it just makes it worse. And people are patting you on the back and fetching you some water - not to be polite, but just to shut you up. Hairball.

In relation to a cat, a hairball is cat hair and possibly other debris that the cat cleaned off of his or her fur. The hair gets stuck in the cat's esophagus and the cat coughs it up.
While it normally does not look like a ball, it is more pleasant to call it a hairball rather than anything else.

A hairball is a small collection of hair or fur formed in the stomach of animals that is occasionally vomited up when it becomes too big.

Hairball: a glob of hair which mainly cats lick and try to swallow, which gets stuck in their throat and they sometime cough up or causes a coughing reflex to try to bring it up. Putting a tiny bit of Vaseline on the tip of the cat's nose can resolve this.

shouldnt this be in pets?cats lick themselves while grooming,eventually the hair builds up in the digestive tract,and on a regular basis,these"hairballs" must be vomited up.very messy for cat owners,especially of long-haired cats !
