Hi Charley,

Try a search engine. I find Yahoo! is normally more accurate than google, so i typed in the words 'world war 2 history and the top link was this great site:

Churchill didn't. He was not the Prime Minister at the start of WWII. Britain declared war on Germany because there was a treaty between them and France that stated if Germany invaded Poland, GB & France would scome to her aid.

Declarations of war have been acceptable means and diplomatic measures since the Renaissance, when the first formal declarations of war were issued.

In public international law, a declaration of war entails the recognition between countries of a state of hostilities between these countries, and such declaration acted to regulate the conduct between the military engagements between the forces of the respective countries. The primary multilateral treaties governing such declarations are the Hague Conventions.

The League of Nations formed in 1919 in the wake of the First World War, and the General Treaty for the Renunciation of War of 1928 signed in Paris, demonstrated that world powers were seriously seeking a means to prevent the carnage of the world war. However, these powers were unable to stop the Second World War and, thus, the United Nations System was put in place after that war in an attempt to prevent international aggression through declarations of war.

I think you may be thinking of The Locarno Pact or Locarno Treaties, so called because it was concluded at Locarno in Switzerland in 1925. The principal Treaty was that between Germany, France, Belgium, Great Britain and Italy, under which the first three signatories undertook not to attack each other, with the other two,(GB and Italy) acting as guarantors. In the event of aggression by any of the first 3 states against another, all the other parties to the treaty were to assist the country under attack. So when Hitler invaded Belgium, he broke the terms of the treaty. This was in May 1940, Churchill was PM by this time, but war had already been declared (Sept 3rd,1939) after Germany invaded Poland on Sept 1st ,against the terms of the Mutual Assistance Treaty that GB had with Poland.(signed on August 25, 1939). Just as a matter of interest, the U.S. proclaimed its neutrality just 2 days after the declaration of war, on September 5th 1939.

Hitler took over Poland in 1939 and joined the Axis powers. England was next and as Japan bombed Pearle Harbor, the United States declared war on Japan.

While other answerers have already answered your query, I think what your daughter needs is a simple WW2 timeline to help her with her project.

If you just google WW2 or Hitler you will be overwhelmed with information.

I found a history timeline which should help her in general with her project, and lists the major events of the war, plus other background information. I also suggest using the BBC website for information, it's excellent and includes clips and other archive material. I have put a link to an appropriate page below, but there is lots more there.

I hope this helps you.

Churchill declared war on Germany! Because Hitler broke the Treaty of Versailles, invaded Poland and Czechoslovakia. Churchill and France had appeased Hitler during most of these but invading Czechoslovakia was the act that made UK declare war on Germmany.

The UK declared war on Hitler's Germany because Germany invaded Poland. Britain warned Germany not to do this, but they did it anyway and Britain was forced to wage war.

GB is not a country...UK is. Great Britain and the United Kindom are two different things.

It was the UK that declared war on Germany.

On August 31, 1939, Hitler and the Nazis staged a Polish attack on a minor German radio station in order to justify a German invasion of Poland. On September 1, Hitler declared war on Poland stating one of his reasons for the invasion was because of "the attack by regular Polish troops on the Gleiwitz transmitter."

France and UK had a defensive pact with Poland. This forced France and UK to declare war on Germany, which they did on September 3.

Also, it wasnt Winston Churchill it was Neville Chamberlain who was Prime Minister at the time.
