They resemble each other, but so do most hero stories. I wouldn't call it a coincidence, because you need the trials, a loveable hero who is also an unlikely hero, and alot of times in literature the snake is always a villian. I think you've made a real good observation. I'll look for it more the next time I watch Naruto, because I didn't notice it before. . . But that is because it is on the brain draining medium called Cable TV.
