I'd prefer a laser printer for mailing labels because the ink won't smear if it gets wet. The drawback is that laser printers and accessories usually cost more than inkjet.

An inkjet printer does not use heat to fix the ink. If you buy mailing labels that work in a laser printer, this is not a problem. If you use generic mailing labels they could come loose and, worst case scenario, get stuck in the laser printer's paper path.
For quality, speed, and overall cost, I'd still recommend the laser.

Advantage to buying an inkjet: Cheaper.
A laser printer might be better for labels. The printing is generally faster, and the ink wont bleed if it gets wet.

When I use my Epson CX3600 inkjet to print address labels, the only problem I've noticed is that the ink can run if it gets wet, so not good for a rainy climate.

Nuno is right. Inkjet is fine for interoffice, but for mailing labels you need laser. The print is actually burned onto the label.(with the help of some toner, that burns it the right color)

Laser because barcode printing needs more accuracy in printing the lines. Using inkjet may cause less accuracy in printing the lines. Hence laser printer is the best

Either one would be fine for just printing labels.
The laser will be better quality naturally, but it costs more and is not really required.
So, it is a tradeoff. Depending on what you can afford.

Ink jet will rob you of your money in ink alone. Plus if ink gets wet no one will read the label as it will be smeared.
Laser is only way to go for cost, speed and to ensure all is visible.
