I have a 1998 Dodge Durango, and my temperature gage went into the red area, and the check gages light came on, then the temp gage went back down to normal. On the same day several hours prior, the temp gage started going towards the red but went back down before getting to the red area. What could be causing this?

Jake covered this rather well. I only want to add another angle...

Your 1998 might have Dex-Cool, often an orange color coolant. If there is air in the radiator or elsewhere in the engine, this stuff will start to gel up. It makes your coolant gage spike up to red and then quickly drop down.

This is easy to confirm, and you will be doing part of this for the other checks that were suggested. When vehicle cools down, remove the radiator cap. If there is thick nasty sludge all over the spring, you may have this condition. Also if the coolant isn't right up under the cap, it could be happening.

If so you need to flush the radiator with a acid cleaner designed for this purpose. If it is really bad, you may have to get it done professionally. Some quotes span $200 to $500.

Hopefully your problem is one of the other ones suggested!

You have a problem with the cooling system. It could be a thermostat sticking, or an indication that you are low on coolant.
Take it to a shop you trust and have it checked. You also might have a water pump belt slipping. If this is the case, you may have to have the cooling system repaired. I suggest a complete diagnostic by someone you trust.
If the cooling sytem need repair, do it right the first time. Re-conditioning the radiator, replacement of the water pump, thermostat, belt and hoses will cost a few bucks but you will have many years of worry free reliability. If you have never had the cooling system repaired then it is time.
Tha car is almost 10 years old and it is due for all of this

Is it truly the "verify gage" easy or is it verify engine easy? no longer attempting to furnish you a herd time yet have had human beings tell me one and or no longer it extremely is the different. The verify gage easy is meant to come again on whilst between the gages are reading much less or greater effective than it extremely is going to be on a similar time as in use. An occasion could be your oil stress gage falls below the conventional selection. Or a value indicator gage falls below or above spec. Double verify all gages and be sure they're in suitable selection. If one isn't, then that's the reason for the easy. If all gages are in spec, then you definately've somewhat a job previous to you to diag the explanation for the easy. A test gadget could be a sturdy start up yet won't truly supply you any codes for the verify gage easy. From there the subject could be a variety of subject concerns. could be a defective device cluster panel, could be a topic with wiring, could desire to be BCM (physique administration module).

Sounds like what you have is a faulty temp sensor. I woul dtake it into a reputable shop and ask them to do an electrical diagnotic on it. It will either be that or a short in the wiring somewhere or it would be that you thermostat is bad or last but not least, it could be that you have a bad fan relay.
