Probably no practical way. You could always distill it by boiling, trapping the steam, and condensing it. Better to just buy it in a bottle.

I wonder why you want to "soften" water. I've done a lot of research on this while searching for a new house, since many of the houses we looked at have water softeners. I concluded that the first thing I need to do is to detach the water softener. Why?

Water softeners make use of salt to grab ions from the water or some such chemical thing. The water that's been softened this way is much better for the pipes in the house, but it's pretty bad for everything else. It "etches" glassware in the dishwasher, duh! Do you want to put that into your system? It's not recommended to water your philodendron - do you want to cook with it?

"Hard" water is just as good to drink and bathe in as any other kind of water. It's just more full of minerals that may or may not give the water an unpleasant taste, but if it's city water then it's not going to kill you.

So why "soften" water?

Chemistry of treating water says NO...A water softener works on Calcium and Magnesium (HARDNESS) and Iron... To remove those you need sodium, in wich that is what the salt does is take the hardness and iron to zero. So there are no stains or buildup. Hard wtaer is like being pregent, you either are or not? lol Hope this helps
