I need to remove both vinyal tiles and a rolled floor.
Putting it OVER it is not an option, the tears, chips are too many to count and the time would be wasted.
Please help- thanks.

The easiest way is to cut out the substrate layer of the subfloor and either replace it or put your new flooring right on top of the actual subfloor. If it is a vinyl floor, it will have a 1/2 inch pice of substrate plywood/pressed wood underneath the vinyl and on top of the subfloor to raise the floor level since vinyl is so thin. To do this, take a rotary saw and adjust the depth of your cut to 1/2". This will cut only the substrate layer and not the actual floor. You then pry the substrate pieces off the floor with a pry bar or hammer. You might want to have your floor checked for asbestos because some of the glues used in the 1970's still had asbestos in them. :)

I know you said putting it over is not an option; but have you completely ruled out floating a wood laminate floor over all of this? A few applications of leveler and the foam underlayment should hide all your imperfections.

Otherwise, if that sheet floor is adhered well; you are in for a whole lot of struggling and cursing to pull that old flooring up.
