Minimum Wage was introduced in 1938, and was established, as all minimum wages are, to allow for a minimum standard of living to those which the law applies to.
I believe the US law was passed mostly in response to the infamously poor conditions of the late and early 1900's US working man.
Contrary to right wing pundits beliefs, it has been proven if minimum labor laws are not established, industry, nor the free market, will willingly adapt them.

minimum wage is in place because the government provides for the country. based on economic charts, the wage would be too low, so the gov. makes it higher.
