This question is far too vague to elicit any serious response. Are you referring to prior to the Civil War, are you referring to Texas alone (which was annexed) or are you talking the colonies in pre-Constitutional days? Add more detail and you will get some answers.

We don't like our towns and cities to become bigger and more crowded. We like our places the way they are. we don't want to become the places where you can't tell one place form another because they all look the same. We prefer individuality. We like our slower way of life and don't want to be just another boring place. Growth is not always good for people and places.
