You may like the Sony Vaio, it is very popular with women and girls. But for a more solid laptop, I will recommend a Toshiba, HP or Lenovo-IBM.

What do you want to do with your laptop? Personal use can mean everything... you could want to do office type stuff, as well as graphic intensive programs (games).
If you're looking for a general recommendation as to brand, I'd look at ASUS models. They're very well made, and they do a good job of putting in quality components that will handle anything you need.
The answer above mine is a bit sexist IMO :) You can have both great build quality and decent looks in a laptop. Of course, I'd pay more attention to the build than the looks.

Sony Vaio is the best best best! Just compare it's screen with another brand & you'll see. But it's so expensive, if you want something inexpensive, go for HP, Toshiba, or Dell. They're also good. By the way, remember to buy a small one (like a 14" one) because it's lighter and easier to carry.

I myself have a Toshiba Equium, they are pretty decent and are high-speed, depending on how much RAM you get with it and the processor helps a great deal too =)
Anything with 512MB or higher should be good.
Personally Toshibas are great because they have a LOT of helpful fix and restore software, so whenever i have a problem with drivers or something i can usually fix it myself with the help of their guide.
Good luck ^^

well, it depends...
1. if you are using as a hard, tough desktop transplant, go for dell , compaq or toshiba. dell inspiron is famous and so is toshiba satellite.
2. if you are going for a mobile, cute ,colourful ones, go for sony
3. if you want to play games, there is alien thing.. specially designed for games.
4. if you are want a simple laptop with yr own specs, go for dell latitude.
5. if u want good internal specs but not attractive body, go for acer.. it's so cheap and you can get modern ones too.
but.. 6. if u r using for the tough one, go for ibm ..(someone has already mentioned it).. it looks like it was ten years old but it won' t break even if u dropped it!
7. if u want to use mac os which is quite cute and beautfiul, go for mac books... but mac don't allow you to play around with files like windows.
okie .. enjoy!
