I started first week of dec last year and about to quit this week. i haven't worked for a while (the entire year last year) since i was doing some little extra's on the side. I found out that i was pregnant 4th week of Dec forcing me to quit my job at the moment. First baby should come first, right? My question is, do i need to file taxes for this year? i didn't adjust any of my exempts or anything on my W2 for the baby yet...what will i do?

If you are not married, and are not a dependent of anyone, then you don't have to file if you made under $8450 in 2006. If you had anything withheld though for federal taxes, you should file to get that amount refunded to you.

For this next year, you'll have tax breaks for the baby. But if you're quitting soon, not much point in adjusting W-4 now.

Good luck.

You are not required to deduct either of these. Car - no. You are not allowed to deduct the cost of the car. You might be allowed to deduct the sales tax, but only if you do not deduct any state income tax. Doctor - only if you were not reimbursed and can determine the exact amount and have documentation. Remembering that it was "about 700" is not sufficient. You need a bill from the doctor or a receipt. Also, you are not allowed to deduct anything that the insurance paid or anything for which you were reimbursed by insurance. Finally, because a deduction is allowed only for the amount by which your medical expenses exceed a certain percentage of your income, if you had only $700 in medical expenses and earned more than $10,000, you might not be allowed to deduct any of your medical expenses.

If you earned any money at all in 2006 you need to file. The baby is not a dependent yet so you don't need to do anything about that.

If you didn't earn over the statatory minimum of $8000 during the year, then no you don't need to file.
