I want to be able to plug the lead into a European style socket and have a bank of around 4 UK sockets. Also what are such things called? Thanks...

Travel adapters. They are common in electronics stores and elsewhere.

Your best bet for what you want is to get one adapter, and then plug a regular UK power strip into that. I'd expect that to work.
