I can go on another shift and make more per hour, work less and it equal the same amount as what I net now working more hours. The problem? On this new shift, I will not be able to see my family during the week. And the job is about 15 to 20 minutes further away. Right now I carpool with another. I get to save on gas. And work is only 40 minutes away. If I go to this other shift, I drive alone. And work will be nearly an hour away. I am just not sure it is worth it. What do you all think?

To me, this doesn't sound like a sensible (or profitable) proposition. The key point you've made is that you will NET the same amount of money as now, but you would be adding on more drive time, more wear and tear on your car and more time away from your family. Not to mention extra gas costs. The only selling point was working less hours, but all the other things you mentioned are negatives.

One other thing to think about. I assume you would be working a second or third (graveyard shift). I do this, and I find my body is extremely tired at the end of my shift. Some mornings, I actually take a 20-30 minute nap in my car, before I can head out on the road. I have to drive partially on an interstate highway and it would be very easy to fall asleep at the wheel. So do think about that when you are making your final decision.

Good luck.

Have you talked with your family? Especially when there are children involved not having a parent around makes a big difference to them. It may also be more pressure and responsibilities for your mate. Can they handle it? Extra money is always nice but is it worth gaining when you're losing precious time that can be spent with the family? Would your family benefit more from the money or having you spend time with them? Working another shift can also be a lot harder on the body. Not everyone can adjust to the change in sleep pattern. Sounds like you have a lot to think about. Hope it works out for you.

Depends on prioirties and responsibilities. If you're not in debt, able to save some money, stay where you're at. If you are struggling perhaps it's time to consider a change. If you are going to make at least an additional $12,000 what you currently make + cover gas and maintenance I say go for it. why are you working les but not able to see the family during the week? Maybe you can move closer to the new job.

if you will come home with the same amount of money, but not be able to carpool, and have to pay for gas, you will end up with less money than when you started

the cost of gas, travel alone, rising earlier, farther distance...and you won't get to see your family. you do the math...i think you'll end up short changed...money isn't everything.
