I had mine done in July of 06. Yes, there is pain. They insert the speculum--no pain, they swab some of the mucus away from your cervix--annoying but not painful. Then they insert the catheter through the cervix-this pinches for like 10 seconds. Next they inflate the balloon--this gave me a stabbing feeling in my uterus--painful but again quick. Next they start the dye--the first few seconds were like wow this isn't bad at all, then all the sudden your uterus cramps down and it hurts. It lasts a little more than a minute and just when you think you're going to scream it suddenly lets up. Many women say to watch the dye go through but I just turned my head and closed my eyes. Also, but sure NOT to reach down and grab your belly when the pain hits.

I had an hsg done a few months back. It was not a pleasant experience, but definately worth it to find out if your tubes are blocked or not. I thought the procedure was pretty uncomfortable, but other's I've talked to have said that they thought it wasn't a big deal.

They tell you to not eat much that day and to take some pain medication ahead of time. I would definately recommend taking something ahead of time. They will probably also do a pregnancy test before you go in just to make sure you are not pregnant since this procedure probably would cause a miscarriage.

So when you get to the the hospital or office where you are having the procedure done they will have to dress in a gown and put a cloth on your lap.

You will lay on your back with your knees together and legs tucked up to your waist (or down at your side). Your ObGyn should be in the room, along with an assistant. The Ob will clean the outside of your vagina with rubbing alcohol. He will then insert a speculum (feels just like getting a pap test). He will insert a small tube through the speculum and up past your cervix. I could feel this, but it wasn't painful. The doctor then cleans your cervix which is a little uncomfortable (no more then a pap test) but not painful.

The worst part comes next when they then insert the dye into your uterus and tubes. This felt to me like really bad menstral cramps.

They have you lay there very still and a radiologist comes in and puts the machine over you to take the images. He may have you move your legs to one side of another to get a better image.

The whole process took less then ten minutes and was well worth it. It was also kind of cool because they show you the images.

Afterward you will want to wear a pad for the day, take another pain pill and crash on the sofa and watch a movie. You'll probably feel a little sore and might have some minor cramping, but you'll feel fine by the end of the day. You might have some strange discharge (a friend of mine did) if your tubes were blocked, because the process of inserting the dye can be enough to clear the tubes.

Best of luck to you! I hope everything turns out well.

Edit: there is no bleeding. The dye they use to clean your cervix is red and sometimes this looks like blood.

The HSG with the dye is very painful. You can take ibruprophen and hour before. I have heard that this lightens the pain. Do not take Tylenol, it can cause too much bleeding afterwards.
Don't worry, the pain only lasts for a little while, just when the dye enter and while it's running through. It only takes a couple of minutes.

I had the HSG with saline done this morning. That one wasn't that bad. Only minimal cramping.

Good luck!

Its wasn't painful...more like uncomfortable. I was told to take 2 tylenol or advil about 1/2 an hour before the test as it helps with the cramps. they are no worse than perios cramps. Take a pantyliner with you for after because there is a little bleeding.
