The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett if you have the patience to read over 900 pages. The most recent book by John Grisham, The Innocent Man, is one of the best current books I've read. My 17 year old daughter rarely reads whole books and she lost sleep because she couldn't put this one down.
If you like female authors I would recommend anything by Nora Roberts or Sue Grafton. These are quicker reads by exceptional writers.
If you're not afraid of the horror genre then Stephen King is an excellent choice, as is Dean Koontz.

I really enjoyed "The Wizards Ward" By Deborah Hale.
It's a fantasy/romance, and there is some action to it. It's not a romance like a Harlequin, there is just a back ground love story to the plot.
It is a 2 book story, book 2 is called "The Destined Queen". The books are a normal length, not super long or too short.
I am sure you will enjoy it.
Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini are also good books. Christoper Paolini pays attention to detail in his books. The movie DID NOT do the book justice. Book 3 has not been published yet.

I see you're getting quite a few fantasy results, but here's another one. I would recommend Sabriel, by Garth Nix. It's not hard to comprehend, but it is several hundred pages. It is a well-written account of a young woman's search for identity as she battles other dangers and deals with new pressures in her life.
If you're not interested in fantasy, I would recommend reading I, Claudius, by Robert Graves. It's historically accurate and is written as though it were the autobiography of the Roman emperor Claudius. Plow through the first couple chapters and you'll really get into it!

Read The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. It has the best action, plot twists, and the English translation captures much of the original style. It's a classic for a good reason!

I have read every single Anne Rice novel there is!! She is AMAZING!!!! She has books about vampires, witches, spirits, mummys, she also has erotic novels. Her writing is rich in details and makes you feel like you are witnessing every thing!!!! Dean Koontz is great as well, his books are a quick read but entertaining. Christopher Rice is a great author as well, like his mom, rich in details, but deals more with realistic fiction than fantasy.

It's a good time in US history to read Animal Farm (or read it again).
There are a lot of parallells between the book and the current US society and government.

The Chronicles of Narnia are great books, despite being classified as "Children"s books. Frank Peretti writes stories about spiritual warfare, and also writes psychological thrillers that are AMAZING. Lurlene McDaniel's books are generally aimed at a younger audience, but they are truly deep and beautiful books.

I read Memoirs of Geisha & let me tell you; it was awesome! I like to read book that are made or about to be made into a movie (fried green tomatoes, the color purple, some stephen king) & then i'll watch the movie. this book got me imagining the surroundings that were described, made me visualize characters, it made me feel her pain & uncertainty about things... it was just a great book. then when i saw the movie, i was amazed at how much was left out...
very nice book & makes you want to learn more about the cultures of Geishas
