Iz it justice to over 124.5 million Muslims?

I think you have heard abt Bangladesh, a Muslim Nation now over decades we are having two holidays a week Friday and Sataturday. Friday iz religious day for Muslims. Now out Gov gone mad they r giving one holiday instead of two and the holiday is SUNDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

No, it doesn't seem fair to require people to work on their religious day.

My guess is that the reasons are economic.

Since the West takes Sunday off, and is the predominant economic power, countries hurt themselves by taking days the West works (the stock market, for instance) off.

I know this was recently a matter of debate during the discussion of Iraq's Constitution.

I think all of you have misinterpreted the poor guy's question.

He is not talking about Muslims in the US or anywhere else. He is talking about Muslims IN BANGLADESH... open your eyes and read, folks =p

And no, it is not fair. Whilst all of these people are lashing out at Muslims, they forget that they themselves enjoy TWO HOLIDAYS a week. Now, if your government came up to you and said "sorry, you only have Saturday off now, you have to work on Sundays"... would you be happy? Of course not!

And how surprising... all over Asia, in Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong... governments are implementing a five-day working week, but in Bangladesh, the government is now making you work six days a week? o_O

I have seen first hand the effect of muslims in my country. I know of one that is a drug pusher - a pimp - a dealer - a kingpin controlling hundreds of teenagers and sending lots of them to thier ruin. When I think of even a hundred thousand of him in canada and the states it scares the hell out of me. The muslim is the biggest threat on civilization today. I dont care about thier holidays etc. I think that dropping nuclear bombs on all major muslim cities would be a good start. They can never be civilized. America is wrecking themselves spending all of that money on iraq while at home the gangs and crimes have soared. There is no group or race of people that threatens the world more than the muslim. There are 3 million in the states - I know a million live in the city of london in the uk. No one ever inflicted such carnage and destruction as muslims. I fear for the future of our youth - in all the western countries. They are bankrupting the us and leaving a vacume that the chinese will fill in the future. America is going to end up a second rate power. As the muzzie Nasser in Egypt did to Britain and France. I think the Israelis have the best method. Hit them with a bullwip and do not let them rise up ever.

I do not agree with the observation of the Asker for the following reasons:

1. We have more or less 18 days as our National/Government declared holidays in Bangladesh.

2. You may add additional 52 days as holidays when our last few successive governments declared and maintained two-days weekly holidays to earn cheap popularity in the name of saving 'energy'.

3. There are chronic political unrest resulting in Strikes and Blockades type work stoppages (holidays in disguise) which our vindictive and dirty politicians would implement along with weekly holidays in tandem. This is to make the long days of no-work period available, that would motivate most of the people living in cities to go and stay with their relatives in village home, thereby making it look as if the majority people did not come out to the street or went to work during the Strike or Blockade calls. And the Strike or Blockade call was a success.

4. There are natural calamities like cyclones, floods and inclement weathers that forces additional work stoppages in Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh economy is not expanding fast enough to significantly reduce the number of people living in poverty. From 2000 to 2004, the economy grew at an average annual rate of 5.8%. According to most economists, the economy needs to grow at least 7% to 8% a year for the country to pull itself out of poverty and create jobs for the estimated two million job seekers who enter the labor force each year. Annual real growth rate of GDP is 6.3%
GNP per capita is $440.
The GDP is made up of agriculture (21%), industry (26.6%) and services (52.4%).

So, it was seen during the last 15 years of our 'practicing democracy' that the actual productive work in Bangladesh is done in or around 175 to 200 days only in a year. With a GNP per capita of Bangladesh is $440 as against the GNP per capita of India which is $714 we can very well see our prevailing level of poverty. Should we observe 2-days weekly holiday and sink further?

Now if you consider that even though we are one of the poorest countries in the world where many people go to bed (if at all they have a proper bed) without food. In such situation if we keep on allowing two-days weekly holidays then who will build Bangladesh? Foreigners who enjoy two-days weekly holidays were having 48-hours work-week for generations before they became wealthy nation and could afford such luxury of 2-days holidays per week. Moreover, in their countries they do not have so many days Strikes or Blockades etc.

Will you choose to be living on foreign aids and enjoying two-day holidays per week forever?

Now about the matter of “Why revert back to Sunday as weekly holiday?” The answer is simple. You have to stay in-tune with the countries of the world where our major exports are going. Exports of goods and services are valued at $8.8 billion annually as against Imports of goods and services total $11.8 billion annually. Who will fill the gap (trade deficit) of 3 billion annually? Answer: Nobody other than our countrymen and by the dint of their continuous hard work. We can hardly afford to waste 2-days per week and put our next generation in a very miserable situation among the world population.

I am in export business for the last 4-years and I get real impatient when in Fridays (ours), Saturdays and Sundays (Buyers in China) we are out of touch and our Orders, Shipment and Payments etc., which gets delayed on regular basis for this offsetting of holidays. Imagine what difficulties the garments sector exporters are facing where every minute is counted to meet the deadline of supply in time. The foreign buyers would simply switch their orders over to any other country (India or China, after the 1-1-2005 abolition of Quota) with which they do not have similar communication problems.

I want to end here as it is getting lengthier and if a nation is sleeping then no matter what their true leadership works day-in and day-out and devise new scheme for them to improve productivity, all go down the drain. In that event nobody can awaken that nation and they would be doomed to be the basket case of the world. Would you like to remain of the receiving end of the aids?

Therefore, please do not resist this change as it was for over Two Hundred of years during and after British rule and during Pakistan as well as during Bangladesh till the ex-dictator Lt. Gen. Ershad changed the weekly holiday from Sunday to Friday to earn cheap popularity in a nation where 85% Muslims live. He was successful to mislead the countrymen and ruined the nation with his 9 years of military rule.

By the way, Bangladesh is not a Muslim Nation. It is People’s Republic of Bangladesh where democracy is practiced. We are termed as “Moderate Muslim Country” by the Western World just to differentiate us from radical Muslim countries like Iran and Pakistan etc.
