Any time you talk with your family the words are verbal communication. Whether you are on the phone or talking in person. However, the the non-verbal body ques and the tone of voice, speed of delivery, etc. (paralinguals) are not technically part of verbal communication. So someone saying "Hey mom can I borrow 50 dollars" is verbal communication. But, the pleading tone and the way he/she hangs their head are not.
Right now I am doing a fam. comm. study into college students use of mediated communication (Phones, Text messages, E-mails) with their parents which actually looks at which kind of communication students use with their parents and how much that depends on the type of relationship the family has. Its a very interesting field. There is a journal on Family Communication that you should be able to access on most universities' on-line databases.

The last verbal communication: "Stop torturing me" An email I sent to my sister so she can read it to my mother. My mother is overly concerned that I haven't been working for a while. Am I going to find a job just so she wouldn't worry, or should I do that when I feel ready to do it? My god, I am 33, I guess 33, 14, same difference for our parents.
