The best person to ask is your child's Dr. Most Dr's recommended putting a child of milk at a the age of 1.
I know my mother did the same to me and I just told her that my daughter's Dr said to wait in til she was a year and that I was going to listen to the Dr.

Follow your Doctor's advice. If your son has been sick a lot at such a young age he may have a suppressed immune system and need different formula.
Soy formula is usually a last resort, because it is not nearly as good for a baby as milk based formula. Trying a gentle one like Nutrimigin is a good start, but it is vital that you get a pediatric doc to advise you in this situation.
In a few more months he will be on cow's milk, so getting the right formula now is better than guessing and switching to soy.

Ms.knowitall is on the ball! How many thumbs up can I give?
Get your child off cow's milk or any formula based on cow's milk. It is making him sick!
Humans are the only animal that drinks milk past infancy, and then it's not even from the correct species! Too many people are still trying to defend milk's supposed health benefits. Unfortunately, they are either using old information or information obtained from research funded by the dairy association. How many people would enjoy a glass of dog's milk or rat's milk? What makes cows special?
There are only two reasons which I've found to support humans drinking cow's milk. We have grown up hearing that it's good for us and we've grown accustomed to the taste and texture. There is absolutely no nutrition that can not be obtained elsewhere, minus the negatives. Calcium seems to be the major claim for milk. It can be found elsewhere in green vegetables, almonds, and many other sources. Where do you think the cows obtain the calcium to put into the milk? Where do other larger animals (elephants, horses, deer, whales, etc) get calcium? Why we continue to drink cow's milk laced with growth hormones, antibiotics, and who knows what else is beyond me.
Since I've given up drinking milk about 5 years ago my health has greatly improved. I suffer fewer allergy problems, asthma and breathing problems are greatly reduced, I'm sleeping better, and I have more energy.
In the '50s smoking was considered harmless but now we realize its dangers. One person at a time and eventually the truth will become widely known that cow's milk is only for baby cows. Milk is indeed the perfect food, but only for infants of the proper species.
Do some research online and decide for yourself.

This is something you should have asked the doctor. You must always ask questions of the doctor so that you understand what is going on with your child. If you don't understand the answer, you need to keep asking until you do understand. I'm not sure what a "bad runny tummy" is, but it sounds like she had a loose stool. Most likely the culprit is a dairy allergy or intolerance, not a lactose problem. Children can grow out of these early problems, but don't try anything with dairy without discussing it with the doctor first.

There are infant formulas that are soy based and perfectly healthy. That said, a change in formula should be discussed with the child's pediatrician. It is true that some infants have problems with regular formula and have a harder time digesting milk, but again, unless your mother-in-law is a doctor, I would thank her for her advice and see your pediatrician.

Best bet is to put you child on breast milk. I have two children my first child was on formula and he stayed sick. My daughter was breastfed and she rarely was sick even months after I stopped she stayed fine. My son still would get sick but she never caught his cold. After I stopped breastfeeding I began to pump the milk and I would give it to both of them. Now both are healthy they rarely get sick and if they get sick. It's only a runny nose and cough for a day or two.
If you consider this option. You would need to first get a pump automatic is the best. Even if you don't have milk anymore you will still be able to pump. It will take about 1-2 weeks before the milk to form. But you must pump everyday about 3 -4 times a day. Do ten mins on one breast then ten on the other. Make sure you oil your nipple and areola so no cracking will occur. Good luck. Oh and pump burns an extra 500cals a day.

Ask your doctor if the reason your child is getting sick is because of the milk and if your doctor says NO then tell your mother in law you have already asked the doctor and he agrees with you that it is not the milk then you won't have any doubts and you have quited your mother in law.

I have three grandchildren and I try not to give advice unless they ask me. My in-laws did this to me and I did not appreciate it. They are not my children and even though sometimes I have to bite my tongue, it helps me maintain a good relationship with all my children and daughter-in-law and son-in-law. They know I'm always there if they need me. As far as switching your baby to soy,my daughter's baby was switched to soy baby formula not regular soy milk. However, the best person to ask is your doctor. That is what he is there for. Good luck!

At 8 months old he still needs formula. If you and the doctor are happy with your formula choice then you don't need to start switching it around. Once he is a year old you can then look at cow's milk and soya milk...
