White vinegar and lemon juice, add it to your wash it will take the smell away and disinfect them as well. And it works as a cheap fabric softener.

Just wash the towels a few at a time on a large load so plenty of space for them to get rinsed. Use an extra rinse cycle if you have one. And place them into the dryer as soon as they are done, to prevent anymore musty smell. I like to use OxyClean when things have an odor, takes most any smell out... unless it's like been there for years. Other wise I normally just use plain old Wisk. Hope this helps.

In the washer with straight vinegar, fill the tub and let it soak for a while. Spin out and wash (I use Borax with the laundry soap). Don't put them in the dryer until you make sure the smell is gone. Might take 2 or 3 washings but it will get rid of the smell.

Very hot wash about 60 degrees. Use extra washing powder and fabric conditioner and air dry them on the line.

Steep them in a solution of bicarbonate of soda overnight and wash at 60 degrees. Make sure they are properly dried before putting them away.

You have to wash them on 60C at least, put in some fabric conditioner for the final rinse.

Bleach and hot water. If they are colored towels then they will be ruined by the bleach so just make sure she gets the ruined towels to use from now on.

Febreze laundry detergent or Gain. Gain smells so good. Maybe some Gain fabric softener too.

Chuck 'em out, cheapskate! After chucking them at your stepdaughter's head to teach her a lesson (put a brick in one of them!)
