That is the guy you always see in those movies sitting in a room looking at a bunch of CCTV monitors fed from cameras looking at all the doors, corridors, and major rooms. He is supposed to stare at them constantly while keeping alert so that if anything suspicious happens he can radio to other guards to check it out. In real life he gets bored out of his gourd by the end of his shift. In the movies some perp who snuck in while he was distracted comes in and hits him over the head.

These operators do operate, as mentioned above, CCTV'S. But they also work gates, doors and bays. I worked for an Armored company who had one of these operators at every branch where we were located, and this Guard would electronically open the roll-up doors to allow our trucks in, 'cage' entrances to allow visitors/employees in and man commo.
The major banks like Wells Fargo, BoA, CitiBank, etc., also have their own 'console operators'. They checked our credentials and other information whenever we arrived to load or unload currency at their terminals - not the individual banks, but at the 'bank's' bank, where the big money is. They have individual 'pods' for each truck to load and unload, so they monitor and direct the truck traffic, which is almost always located underground beneath those giant sky scrapers in major cities, and dictate which truck goes into which pod, all over radio or through the PA systems. No contact is necessary.
It's a good START if you have an interest in the Law Enforcement/Security field.
