It seems ridiculous and unnecesary to me that in the year 2007 I still have to deal with middlemen in so many transactions. If I want a Toyota, I should be able to go straight to Toyota, not a franchised dealer who makes a hefty profit as a middle man. Same with mattresses and many other items.
This would be in the best interest of me, the consumer, as well as the manufacturer. By cutting out the middle man, the manufacturer and I would both save money. So why don't more companies sell their products directly?

because when you manufacture thousands of items or hundreds of thousands of items, its easier to sell large quantities to wholesalers whom in turn sell them to retailers in smaller amounts and every person in the chain makes a profit on the transaction. It would be too much work for them to sell directly to the consumer.

I talked directly to the people in Lords town, Ohio about this. The employees that work in the plant are not even allowed to buy from them. It is RETAIL. The plant builds a product and it is distributed through Dealerships. They do offer employee discounts and incentives. A Dealership has the means to: sell a product- arrange financing- process legal paperwork- prep the product before the sale- render any corrections necessary- offer service and warranty for the product- the Dealership is the Lea son between manufacturer and consumer.
Factory can not offer these services.

If you are willing to travel to the factory you can buy a car directly from any of the manufacturers.
